Coming in 2026: Sabathani Community Resilience Hub
For nearly six years, Sabathani Community Center has been laying the groundwork for a bold, future-focused investment in South Minneapolis: the Sabathani Community Resilience Hub.
Designed to serve as a safe, reliable place to turn during extended power outages, climate-related emergencies, and times of heightened community need, the Resilience Hub strengthens Sabathani’s role as a place of stability, care, and connection for our neighbors.
At the heart of the Community Resilience Hub is the long-term Community Energy Project focused on ensuring the building can remain operational when it matters most. Over the past several years, we’ve built strong partnerships with nonprofit collaborators, philanthropic supporters, elected officials, and utility partners – and successfully secured the funding needed through federal, state, city, and philanthropic sources to bring this vision to life.
We are excited to share that construction begins this month, with several major project components coming online throughout 2026.
Project Components & Timeline
By 2026, the Community Resilience Hub will include:
- Geothermal heating and cooling (January–October 2026)
A clean, energy-efficient system to heat and cool the building year-round. - 252 kW rooftop solar installation (Spring 2026)
Rooftop Solar panels to generate renewable power for the facility. - 500 kW battery energy storage system (Summer 2026)
On-site battery storage and microgrid to keep the building operational during outages. - Workforce Development Living Learning Lab (Beginning January 2026)
A hands-on space to support workforce development and training in clean energy technologies.
What to Expect During Construction
Over the next few weeks, you’ll begin to see construction activity on site. Interior work in hallways is expected to begin in mid-January, with exterior construction slated to start in February, weather permitting.
During this time:
- Parking will be limited, as construction vehicles and materials will occupy the north area of the parking lot.
- All construction workers inside the building will have visible identification.
- Construction teams have been informed to remain aware of and sensitive to ongoing community events, programs, and building activities.
We appreciate your patience and understanding as this important work gets underway.
Community-Centered Planning
In Spring 2026, Sabathani will convene a community focus group to help guide additional planning and ensure the Resilience Hub reflects the real needs, priorities, and lived experiences of our neighbors.
