Sabathani Community Center is proud to launch a new extension of our Living History Museum: the Sports Hall of Fame, celebrating the athletes, coaches, teams, and community leaders who have shaped the legacy of South Minneapolis sports. 

This Hall of Fame will honor and celebrate African American individuals who have had an impact in sports in South Minneapolis, as well as individuals of any race whose work has made a significant positive impact on African American athletes, youth, or sports programs in South Minneapolis.

Five selected honorees will be featured in a new permanent display on the 2nd floor near the gym, with a community unveiling event in February 2026.

Nominate a South Minneapolis Sports Legend

We invite you to nominate individuals or teams who have made a meaningful contribution to South Minneapolis athletics, whether through achievement, mentorship, advocacy, or historical significance. 

Nominees may include: 

  • Athletes
  • Coaches or staff members
  • Teams
  • Community builders or advocates
  • Legacy / historical contributors

Timeline 

  • Nomination Period: December 1, 2025 – January 19, 2026
  • Committee Review: January 20–30, 2026
  • Honorees Notified: Week of February 2, 2026
  • Community Unveiling & Celebration: February 27, 2026

Athletes Currently Featured in the Living History Museum

The following athletes are already included in the Sabathani Living History Museum and will be part of the new Sports Hall of Fame exhibit on the 2nd floor:

  • Russell Gary
  • George Foreman
  • Tayler Hill
  • Solomon Hughes, Sr.
  • Tony Oliver
  • Lea B. Olson
  • Alan Page
  • Robert Wells “Bobby” Marshall

Some of these individuals have been temporarily relocated from the Southside Heroes Hall on the first floor, and all will be integrated into the new Sports Hall of Fame display as part of its inaugural installation, along with the five new honorees.
