Leading with care: Sherri Green featured on MPR News
Taking care of the South Minneapolis community isn’t just part of Sabathani Community Center’s mission; it’s something that runs deep for Sherri Green.
In a recent feature from MPR News, Sherri reflects on her journey from growing up in the neighborhood to now serving as Sabathani’s Director of Critical Services. Her work today centers on the Food Distribution Center, where she and her team support hundreds of community members each week with food, clothing, and care grounded in dignity.
“I got to actually touch people in the community. Talk to them, feed them, tell them what we’re doing,” Sherri shares. “I’m a relator, so I build relationships. I’m at home at what I do.”
Over the past six years, Sherri has helped transform Sabathani’s food shelf—expanding staff, improving access through appointments and multilingual support, and creating a more welcoming, people-centered experience. At the heart of it all is a simple but powerful approach: slow down, listen, and lead with empathy.
“This is why I do this,” she says. “When people say thank you.”
