A Message from Scott Redd – June 2026

As we enter another Minnesota summer, I’m excited about all that’s happening at Sabathani Community Center. Our halls and gathering spaces will be filled with youth programs, wellness activities, community events, and opportunities for neighbors of all ages to connect and grow together. 

This season also invites reflection. It has been six years since the murder of George Floyd, an event that forever changed Minneapolis and brought the eyes of the world to our community. In the years since, South Minneapolis has experienced challenges, grief, uncertainty, and change. Yet through it all, I have continued to witness something powerful: the resilience of our neighbors and the strength that comes from community. 

At Sabathani, we believe that no one should have to face difficult times alone. Over the past year, our Violence Interrupters helped build safer pathways for healing and connections. While that specific program has concluded, our commitment remains the same. We will continue to be a place where people can find support, resources, and a sense of belonging, whether they are 3 months old or 103 years young. 

Recent years have reminded us that we are better together. During moments of uncertainty, we have seen neighbors show up for one another, offer support, and affirm the dignity of every person. That spirit of mutual care is what has sustained our community through challenging times, and it is what gives me hope for the future. 

This year, Sabathani celebrates 60 years of service to South Minneapolis. While many organizations have come and gone, Sabathani has remained because generations of community members have believed in the importance of this work. We have been here through challenges and triumphs alike, and we remain committed to serving our community for generations to come. 

I hope you’ll join us in celebrating this milestone at our 60th Anniversary Block Party this August. Together, we’ll honor our history, celebrate our community, and look ahead to the future we are building together.
