Celebrating Wellness: Health Fair Highlights

Sabathani Community Center recently hosted a vibrant health fair that brought together hundreds of community members of all ages for a day of health awareness and fun.

Part of Sabathani’s Better Together initiative, the fair aimed to unite the community in supporting collective health and addressing health disparities. This community-centered care approach was evident in the presence of healthcare professionals who represent and understand the community’s needs.

The focus of the event centered on diabetes screenings with follow-up resources offered to those who tested high or at risk. These new Sabathani programs include Cooking Matters, a six-week course in healthy eating, and Living Well, a comprehensive course to health management for those living with chronic conditions. (Registration is currently open for both of these programs. See below for more details.)

In addition to the free health screenings, the event featured numerous exhibitors, dance classes, kids’ activities, raffle drawings, and more – all set to a soulful soundtrack by DJ Q Bear. Congratulations to our grand prize winner, Linda Kelley, who received a $50 gift card.

Coverage by MinnPost captured the event’s essence with a variety of powerful stories, highlighting Sabathani’s longstanding commitment to South Minneapolis and the Black community.

In their article, Rev. Dr. Ora Hokes, a community representative for the Breast Cancer Education Association, praised Sabathani’s trusted status within the community, making it an ideal venue for empowering community members to advocate for their health needs. By hosting such events in trusted spaces like Sabathani, individuals feel welcomed, safe, and encouraged to engage in healthcare outreach.

The slideshow below showcases the event’s diverse exhibitors, the joyful atmosphere, and the strong sense of community that permeated the health fair.
